Other Sketches and Paintings
I mostly paint outside from life, but occasionally paint at home from other sources. Here are some of those sketches and paintings. Click on any one for a larger view and to launch the carousel.
This is one of the 3 first watercolor paintings I ever did. It’s after a historic photograph I found of the Nile on WikiCommons.
This is the house my mom’s family lived in in the Gold Coast in West Africa (Independent Ghana since 1957.) This is based on a portion of a painting my grandfather did at that time. The property is now abandoned. :(
I’m not good at people yet, so I occasionally try to practice from photographs. This was among my nephew’s Facebook photos, and when I painted it and posted it, he got very excited and made it his profile picture!
I know I shouldn’t, but I take a lot of photographs while I’m driving, and this is based on one of them. I love the color of the bus.
I’ve been kind of freaked out by planes since watching the 9/11 incident with my bare eyes. The fact that I depicted a plane travelling Right to Left is a big step for me, because that’s the direction of the plane I personally saw go in, and I usually have a pretty strong visceral reaction to planes travelling that direction. I think I added the birds to give a second focual point and meaning to the composition.
I wanted to paint live when I was in Vegas for work, but I chickened out, and I might have gotten stopped anyway. I surreptitiously took a photograph similar to this, but almost everything is changed from the photograph.
This is just out of my head.
